motion-art-direction

This skill should be used when the user asks to "direct a motion graphics video", "do creative/art direction for a video", "define a motion language", "set the tone and pacing", "make the animation feel consistent", "decide what to animate (and what not to)", "turn a brief/brand into motion choices", or needs the senior creative judgment that sits above specific techniques (gsap/lottie/shader). Covers motion language, tone & energy, pacing/rhythm, motion hierarchy, restraint, and cross-shot consistency.

Control levels describe skill capabilities and suggested control measures; they do not represent quality or safety certifications, nor do they dictate usability. 1How It Works & Mechanism

Pure decision methodology skill: Zero scripts and zero execution, breaking down "art direction" into a 7-step directional workflow (Brief → Tone → Motion language → Hierarchy → Restraint → Shot → Consistency), where each step outputs text decisions to ultimately deliver a motion-language spec and shot-by-shot directional notes.

| 7. Consistency check | Audit against the spec | Pass/fail per shot |
Workflow table: Col 1 = Step, Col 2 = Decision question, Col 3 = Output; the entire table defines the agent's execution sequence, and all outputs are decision text rather than files or code.

Core mechanism is "define the motion language before animating": A one-sentence rule plus a 6-row spec form (easing family / base timing unit / transition family / stagger rhythm / motion intensity / hold discipline), choosing only one per row and reusing it globally.

skills/motion-art-direction/SKILL.md
**Define the motion language first, then animate to it.**
The spec table serves as the carrier for cross-shot consistency: "Fill every row with ONE choice and reuse it everywhere." Consistency is defined as "adherence to the same spec" rather than mystical aesthetics.

The tone & energy 2×2 matrix coordinates style positioning (calm ↔ kinetic × soft ↔ sharp), dictating that "the entire video occupies only one cell; mixing across cells is the primary cause of inconsistency."

skills/motion-art-direction/SKILL.md
Pick one cell and commit. Mixing cells within a piece is the most common cause of "inconsistent" motion.
Four named motion personalities below the matrix (Playful/Premium/Corporate/Energetic) provide numerical presets for ms duration + cubic-bezier + overshoot %, translating qualitative styles into communicable quantitative vocabulary.

Motion personalities are designed as cross-skill shared contracts: Other skills (gsap/lottie/video packs) can directly state "use the Premium personality" to inherit the exact same values.

skills/motion-art-direction/SKILL.md
This is shared vocabulary — other skills (e.g. `gsap-web`, `micro-interaction`, the video packs) can just say "use the Premium personality."
This serves as the orchestration layer design in this repository's 9-skill architecture: motion-art-direction sets the rules, technical skills execute; "the video packs" refers to other packs in iart-ai.

"Subtraction" is institutionalized: The restraint pass requires asking "does the motion carry meaning?" for every element, keeping elements without meaning static; hierarchy divides into hero/support/texture tiers, mapping to the three motion layers of animation-principles.

skills/motion-art-direction/SKILL.md
For each element ask: *does the motion carry meaning?* If not, hold it still.
The three-tier system and the "exactly one hero per frame" gate turn "moving less" into an auditable rule ("If two elements compete for the eye in one frame, the direction has failed.").

Concludes with a self-auditing consistency check: A shot-by-shot audit against the spec (homogeneous easing, base-multiple durations, single transition family, consistent stagger, hold discipline, single hero per frame), where any "no" indicates a directional defect.

skills/motion-art-direction/SKILL.md
Any "no" is a direction defect, not a craft preference — fix it before polishing.
Converts subjective "feels inconsistent" impressions into a 6-item checkable list; a complete pre-render checklist in the reference file follows up.

In-depth content resides in references/direction-playbook.md: Pre-filled specs for 5 tone cells, brief templates, shot-by-shot directional note templates, brand word-to-motion parameter translation tables, easing quick references, pacing charts, and pre-render checklists.

SKILL.md retains only the framework, offloading templates/examples to references—keeping single-file density aligned with other skills in this repo.

2Core Capabilities

017-step directional workflow (from a single-line creative intent brief to pass/fail consistency audit)
02Tone & energy 2×2 matrix positioning + 4 named motion personality numerical presets
03Motion-language spec 6-row single-choice form (easing/timing/transition/stagger/intensity/hold)
04Easing budget discipline: Maximum of two curves (one in, one out); a third must justify its existence
05Three-tier motion hierarchy (hero/support/texture ↔ Primary/Secondary/Ambient) + single hero per frame gate
06Restraint pass: Static checklist and "what not to do" anti-patterns (no full-frame simultaneous motion, no transition-within-transition, no looping animated text, no overshoot on financial content, only one wow moment per video)
07Pacing & rhythm mapping (low-energy intro → build → peak → settled end card, key actions landing on beats)
08Reference depth pack: Pre-filled specs for 5 tone cells + brand word translation table + directional note templates + pre-render checklist

Evidence & Triggers (File Paths & Excerpts)
  • SKILL.md: Pure prompt instructions and rule text, without script execution or external side effects
Audit Notes: Pure instruction/decision methodology: No script execution, no outbound network requests, no credential reading, and no local file writes (deliverables are spec texts output into chats/documents by the agent); the sole input is the user's brief in the conversation. The only caveats are conversational guidance (recommending personality/spec may anchor the user's aesthetic) and iart.ai marketing links, neither of which poses code-level risks.

5Second-Pass Verification

  • [ok] 无脚本/无外发/无凭证结论反查 — 两文件 token 扫描零命中;目录无 scripts;唯一外链为 iart.ai 营销链接(人点击,非 agent 抓取)。
  • [ok] SKILL.md 与 playbook 数值一致性 — Premium 350–600ms / cubic-bezier(0.4,0,0.2,1) / 0% overshoot 等在 SKILL.md personality 表与 playbook calm-soft spec 中一致;无自相矛盾。
  • [discrepancy] 交叉引用可解析性 — SKILL.md 引用 `gsap-web`、`micro-interaction`、`launch-video`,但本 repo(9 skill:after-effects/animation-principles/beat-sync-editing/color-motion/logo-animation/motion-art-direction/motion-background/remotion-video/shot-composition)中不存在这些 skill——指向其他 iart pack;单装本 pack 时这些引用悬空。
  • [ok] 描述中 'version: 0.1.0' 与仓库节奏 — frontmatter version 0.1.0;仓库 3 个提交(restructure→README funnel→UTM),2026-06-22 pin 后无更新(GitHub pushed_at 一致)。

6Verdict & Scenarios

  • Compiles mystical "art direction" into auditable numerical specs (ms/curve/overshoot%/hold), enabling reproducible execution by agents
  • Motion personality serves as a cross-skill contract, preventing technical skills from individually inventing style vocabularies
  • Restraint/hierarchy anti-pattern lists directly target and resolve the common issue of "overly busy/cluttered animation"
  • Zero execution surface = zero risk surface, safely mountable on any host; playbook provides five ready-made specs to replicate
  • Best for: Ideal for pre-production motion design setup: diagnosing decision-level causes when animation feels busy/cheap/inconsistent, translating briefs/branding into motion rules, or establishing a unified standard when orchestrating multiple execution skills (gsap/lottie/remotion/AE).
Not for: Not suitable for strictly finalized tasks requiring only specific animation code/techniques (invoke execution skills directly); not suitable for experimental/unconventional visual styles (the preset matrix enforces mainstream aesthetics); not suitable for workflows needing direct output of renderable files (this skill does not handle execution).
