ljg-paper

"Explain research papers to readers without a specialist background: what the paper studies, what the authors contribute, how the findings follow, and what the evidence does not establish. USE WHEN the user shares an arXiv link, paper URL, PDF, local paper, or paper title, or asks to read, explain, analyze, or understand a paper. Defaults to a saved Org note. NOT FOR reproduction, formal peer review, benchmark tables, or literature surveys."

1How It Works & Mechanism

The entire skill constitutes a writing framework for "clearly explaining research papers": driven by three goals (clarifying what the paper did, helping readers understand why it updates existing knowledge, and enabling readers to explain the findings themselves), where each goal is evaluated independently and cannot substitute for another.

skills/ljg-paper/SKILL.md
What this does: SKILL.md defines the standard of "understanding" via three goals, and all subsequent writing rules serve to fulfill them.

Workflow Routing dispatches based on input: when given a paper link or PDF, it references the ReadingGuide and two templates to generate an Org note plus a paper-map research record.

skills/ljg-paper/SKILL.md
| arXiv、PDF、论文链接、本地论文 | `ReadingGuide.md`、`references/template.org`、`references/paper-map.md` | 一份 Org 解读笔记和一份 paper-map 研究记录 |
What this does: Serves as an entry routing table, specifying which materials to read and which files to generate for different inputs.

Fixed conventions for saving to disk: defaults to ~/Context/, uses Denote format for filenames, generates timestamps with date, and preserves original files and identifiers when rewriting existing notes.

skills/ljg-paper/SKILL.md
What this does: Hardcodes artifact paths and naming discipline to ensure consistency with the user's Org/Denote workflow.

The bundled validation script must be executed after writing to jointly verify the Org note and paper-map (metadata, research records, matching main text representations, formatting, and reading check completion).

skills/ljg-paper/SKILL.md
bun {skill_dir}/scripts/validate_note.ts /absolute/path/to/note.org
What this does: Adds a mechanical validation step to deliverable handoff; the script checks only records and formatting, without evaluating argument correctness or genuine reader comprehension.

Readability is not guaranteed by the script; instead, an independent reading check is performed by a "fresh context that did not participate in writing" reading solely the final note, recording four PASS/FAIL items.

skills/ljg-paper/SKILL.md
What this does: Distinguishes "valid formatting" from "truly understandable", using an independent evaluator to cover what the script cannot inspect.

Evidence is classified into three categories (core, supporting, reference) and curated by purpose; the body text prioritizes the most representative results rather than padding content to cover categories.

skills/ljg-paper/ReadingGuide.md
What this does: Defines selection criteria for paper-map records and body text evidence, controlling length and cognitive load.

Numbers must always be contextualized: state what question the experiment asks, what was controlled, and what comparison was made before explaining which judgment the result alters; pseudo-simplifications like breaking into tiny paragraphs or spelling out numbers are avoided.

skills/ljg-paper/SKILL.md
What this does: Prevents results from degenerating into a list of numbers, emphasizing the practical meaning and conclusion limitations of differences.

ASCII diagrams are preferred when readers need to track roles, information flow, state transitions, or multiple dimensions simultaneously, determined by whether the diagram reduces cognitive load.

skills/ljg-paper/ReadingGuide.md
What this does: Provides the criterion for graphical presentation (reducing cognitive load) rather than mandating a fixed number of figures.

2Core Capabilities

01Three-goal framework for paper explanation targeting non-specialist readers
02Org explanation note artifacts + template contract (template.org)
03Denote naming and ~/Context/ disk storage convention (including preserving original files and identifiers upon rewrite)
04paper-map research record: source, evidence, selection rationale, check results
05Bundled validation script validate_note.ts (metadata, research record, body text representations, format, reading checks)
06Independent reading check protocol: four PASS/FAIL criteria (clarity, research questions & contributions, shift in understanding, self-explanation of results)
07Case-driven explanation and ASCII diagram methodology (reducing cognitive load for relationships and information flows)

Evidence & Triggers (File Paths & Excerpts)
  • scripts/: Local script or command execution: scripts/validate_note.ts (runs with bun; validates metadata, records, formatting, and reading checks of Org notes and paper-map)
File read/write and artifact output: ~/Context/{YYYYMMDDTHHMMSS}--paper-{…}__paper.org (Org explanation note, Denote naming)
Audit Notes: Blue, normal use. Evaluation applies solely to this skill directory: bundled with validate_note.ts / paper_map_compat.ts Bun scripts, both performing local reading and validation (reading Org notes and paper-map, outputting diagnostics), with no fetch/http, no credential/env reading, and no hardcoded endpoints (no hits across bundle §3 scans). Real write operations are limited to local notes (.org and paper-map in ~/Context/) and manual Emacs verification, qualifying as blue ("local scripts/CLI and local read/write only"). Paper retrieval relies on host capabilities outside the scripts; the description declares "saved Org note" with no external transmission declared, thus not upgraded to yellow/orange.

5Second-Pass Verification

  • [ok] 脚本仅本地校验、无网络 — §1 列 validate_note.ts / paper_map_compat.ts 两个 Bun 脚本;§3「網路請求」「URL / 端點」无命中,scripts_executed 与 network_calls=[] 成立。

6Verdict & Scenarios

  • Breaks "explaining a paper clearly" into three independently verifiable goals, establishing that fluency, accuracy, and self-explanation cannot substitute for one another, avoiding superficial fluency masking weak explanations.
  • Division of labor between mechanical validation (validate_note.ts) and independent reading check protocol: the script checks format/records, while a fresh context evaluator judges readability solely from notes, keeping boundaries clean without overreach.
  • Artifacts tightly integrate with the Org/Denote workflow (~/Context/, identifier, consult-notes, org-lint), rather than disposable throwaway outputs.
  • Explicit security defense line: full paper text (including appendices and code) is treated as untrusted input; suspicious instructions prompt immediate stopping and reporting without execution.
  • Best for: Ideal for writing scenarios where papers need to be made understandable to non-specialist readers (or oneself): Org explanation notes + paper-map research records for methodology, benchmark/evaluation, or theory papers; also suitable as an enforced specification and validation pipeline for writing paper explainers.
Not for: Not suitable for experiment reproduction, formal peer reviews, benchmark tables, or literature surveys (as listed in NOT FOR); also unfit for casual conversational summaries, refusal to store Org files to disk, or situations where independent evaluation cannot be provided.
